I have seen people from all walks of life struggle with the concept of structure. I have seen many people with mental health issues with a great sense of structure in their lives. In general, those same people who have implemented structure into their lives in general have a better quality of life than those who don’t. When a mind feels fragmented, structure can often seem overwhelming. The principles of structure talked about in this section are:
· Flexibility
· Routine
· Schedule
· Staples
Truly embracing mental health recovery means utilising all four of these principles. Sometimes one at a time, sometimes all at the same time, because they are essential for our mental health.
Do what works for you at varying life stages. You might find that you can schedule in your head quite well without writing it down or there are elements of your life you want to make staples later down the track because they wouldn’t work with your routine at the moment. Play around with these principles because if they are tuned right for your lifestyle, you can optimise mental wellbeing. It is important that flexibility weaves them together.
