Every one has staples in their lives. Staples are the things that we can safely say won’t change for the week, month, year ahead. One of my staples is sleeping at the same time each weeknight. This doesn’t mean I always keep it, but it is there anyway. There are times when these staples are going to change eg. I’m going out to the pub with friends and there is no way I’m going to be in bed by 10pm. As a staple, I try and have some time to myself each day. This could be to read a book, play a game or watch an enjoyable show on TV. Staples are called staples because they do just that. They help us keep structure in our lives. Core staples of mine include:
· Medication
· Sleep – Wake up and go to bed at consistent times
· Walk my dog
· Ride my bike to work (exercise)
· Balanced diet
· Seeing family and friends
It helps my planning if I put all these staples in my schedule for the week. Then anything else gets added around these. Staples should be the helpful markers that help us organise our lives and our mental wellbeing.
