There have been times when I have had to sit with uncomfortable changes to my medication. Sometimes this has been necessary for a long-term positive outcome. Giving certain meds a chance to do their thing is a part of recovery. In saying this, there have been times when I knew in 2-3 days that a drug wasn’t going to work for me. In this instance, the drug was Seroquel- the anti psychotic that has helped millions around the globe. I was attempting a switch from olanzapine to seroquel (both anti-psychotics) because olanzapine had a carb loading side effect on me.
On the first night of seroquel, I closed my eyes to go to sleep and all I saw were nightmarish images. I gave it a chance for one more night and it had the same effect. I booked the Psychiatrist and got put back on olanzapine as soon as I could. If medication doesn’t suit, it can be a definite barrier to recovery. Medication is the not the answer, but with fine-tuning combined with other techniques and strategies, it can serve as a great enabler for your quality of life.
