I used to joke that dog is spelt God backwards because dogs show unconditional love. No matter what I do my dog never judges me. No doubt other pets have similar qualities. My pet beagle played a crucial part in my recovery. Many days I couldn’t get out of bed because of hopelessness. My beagle would walk in the room and want to jump on the bed with me. I could spend a while talking about the value of dogs, cats and other pets. Even a goldfish can give a depressed person a sense of responsibility. And in this responsibility caring for pets, we can use this as a stepping-stone for greater responsibility for ourselves toward recovery.
