My name is Lachlan. In 2002 I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (Type 1). I dropped out of high school on the day of my first year 12 exam because a manic episode had begun. From 2002 - 2007 I was hospitalised three times in three different states. Victoria, NSW and Queensland. Since 2007 I have had no major episodes. Among other things, I manage my condition with the same medication i've been on since 2002.
This is my spiel. As a Peer Practitioner for a mental health service, this is what I tell clients. Over time, as rapport is developed, my lived experience is shared in more detail, depending on whether I feel it helps the client or not. People with a lived experience should never feel ashamed of that experience. It is etched inside us through blood sweat and tears. I believe the resilience we build and the life experience gained from a recovered mental illness is immense. At the very least, I see lived experience as an opportunity to share and to educate others about mental health. Use your story as a tool.
